“Good. Now imagine that but on steroids. And crack. And more steroids. And maybe mixed with a fever dream no one asked for. That’s a mate.” I blinked. “So… a soulmate?” She shook her head. “No darling, soulmate is soft. Cute. Romantic. Mate is… violent destiny. Mate is permanent. Mate is stick-to-you-like-glue energy. Mate is ‘if you die, I die’ nonsense. Mate is a cosmic marriage contract signed with magical blood and no human consent form.” I stared at her. She stared back. “That sounds like kidnapping with extra toppings,” I said. “Welcome to the supernatural world,” she replied.

"Mr. Greenwood, I do." Arnold's eyes were wet as he gripped my hand tight, as if he were holding the whole world. He slid the ring onto my finger, then bent down and kissed me—soft, slow, full of love. Behind us, Bailey's cries tore through the air. But none of that had anything to do with me anymore. A soul match is a bond that is created by a higher power to seal two souls together no matter the circumstances. We were destined to meet and, as hard as we try and no matter who we pair up with, we will always have a need to interact with each other.” His voice cracked as he said in a voice that was just above a whisper, “It can be a torturous affliction if only one of us loves the other.”

My parents' faces looked full of both pain and sympathy, a look I hadn't received since I was merely a child on a bike.
