The sheer exhaustion finally caught up with me, and I let myself slide to the floor, a few tears slipping out before I could stop them. I clenched my fists, fighting to keep silent as the weight of my emotions finally broke through. The pain of the bond’s absence, the anger and betrayal, the fear and uncertainty—all of it flooded over me, and I could barely breathe from under the force of it.
I only allowed myself those few stolen moments to cry, though. I couldn’t afford more. If I let myself break down completely, I’d never be able to get up again.
