I Spared Myself a Nightmare Marriage

I Spared Myself a Nightmare Marriage

The day before my wedding, my friend sent me a link to a viral web app called 'A Conversation with Your Future Self.' Looking at my fiancee, Wilma Lambert, still asleep beside me, I decided to give it a try and sent a message. [Future me, I'm marrying the woman I've loved for seven years tomorrow. I'll definitely be happy after we get married, right?] The screen flickered, and a reply came almost instantly. [No. That's because your wife has already cheated on you. On your wedding night, she'll spend it with your best friend, Hank Gilbert.] The smile on my face vanished instantly. I frowned and instinctively argued back. [How is that possible? Apart from my parents, Wilma and Hank are t

MAD END'S DECEPTION

MAD END'S DECEPTION

ARAH She had no clients booked for the morning, so she took the opportunity to tidy up her studio. With earphones in, she let an audiobook play on her phone—a story about a human girl falling for an alien amidst a war between their species. The premise had sounded silly to her at first, but it quickly became a welcome escape from the unhappy thoughts and memories she was desperate to avoid. The tale drew her in, sparking her curiosity about how beings from two entirely different species could find a way to fall for each other. To mate, even.

I'm Just Humanity's Spare Battery

I'm Just Humanity's Spare Battery

" Mom's excuses died in her throat, and Dad's hands began to shake as he gripped the steering wheel. The air inside the vehicle seemed to solidify. It was a valid question, after all. Just how long has it been? Even I couldn't remember that anymore. The off-road vehicle jostled along the bumpy road that led to the ruins of the old base. By the time they arrived, everyone couldn't speak. A thick layer of frost covered the entrance to the cryopod. The frost had spread outward through the seams of the hatch, forming delicate ice crystals. The last trace of color drained from Mom's face. She stood right at the door, too scared to take another step.

Free Meals, Full Audacity

Free Meals, Full Audacity

After I moved into my new apartment, my neighbor, Bianca Ferraro, started showing up at my door every evening for a free meal. I lived alone and always cooked more than I needed. For the sake of keeping the peace, I did not mind sharing. That changed one workday at 3:00 am, when someone pounded on my door and yelled, "Open up! My boyfriend's waiting at the bar downstairs. Make me a cheese platter and open a bottle of red wine. I need to bring it down." I opened the door, still half-asleep, and stared at Bianca standing in the hallway. "You're serious?" She rolled her eyes. "Don't act like it's such a big deal. It won't even take you that long." My temples throbbed. "I'm not your pers

S.A.S.

“We improvise it live.” Pauly handed her a slim, battered paperback—Mockingbird, cover worn, pages gutted to hold a wafer-thin transceiver and a micro-SD slot. “Your new copy. Same weight as the real one. Press the title twice if you’re burned; it wipes your last three hours and plays an audiobook. Press the author twice and it pings us with location.” She slid the book into her tote without looking. “And if I press the spine?” “It complains about being objectified,” Pauly said.

New Year's Eve: I Learned I'm the Spare

New Year's Eve: I Learned I'm the Spare

The day before New Year's Eve, my wealthy parents, Mitchell Parker and Delilah Smith, and my sister, Mila Parker, finally agree to ring in the New Year with me at the amusement park. However, when I arrive there, they are nowhere to be found. When I text them, they tell me they're stuck in traffic and will be late. I wait alone there until the clock hits midnight. Then, I come across my adopted brother Leo Meyer's Instagram post. He's dressed in an expensive suit, holding the piano trophy he has just won, with Mom, Dad, and Mila gathered around him at a New Year's Eve party. The caption reads, "It's another year with my family who truly loves me." His friends start liking the post. T

THE SPARE LUNA

THE SPARE LUNA

That place had taken so much from me. But it would not take my freedom. Lydia started driving. I leaned back and closed my eyes. “I’m finally free,” I whispered. Then my phone rang. I opened my eyes. Deucalion. I stared at his name. The call ended. A second call came. Then another. I turned the phone face down. Lydia glanced at me. “Who is calling?” “Deucalion.” Her expression changed. “He knows?” “I don’t know.” The phone rang again. I ignored it. Lydia pressed harder on the accelerator.
