Lucian’s note had come with a final line: “The devil doesn’t wear horns. He wears charm. Find his weakness.” Ayla exhaled slowly. She was no longer Ayla Monroe. Not here. Tonight, she was a ghost. Inside, the gala pulsed with orchestrated elegance. Women in gowns worth more than Ayla’s rent glided past men with blood-stained hands wrapped in Armani. Waiters floated by with champagne. It would’ve been beautiful if she didn’t know who half these people were — or what they’d done to get here. Lucian’s voice echoed in her mind: “Serrano traffics secrets. You’ll be one of them by midnight if you fail.”

But he has another identity, a dark one. He was the lord of the Las Vegas underworld. He was the mafia. Others must disappear when they see him far off. Merciless and ruthless, blood is no substance to him. Torturing people gives him immense pleasure and he does it with relish. Going against him is the last thing anyone that knows him will want to do, because it can only end up in royal tragedy. During the day, he was a cool business man. At night, he removes his mask and assumes the form of the demon he really was.

Back when they were twelve, Michael had been briefly fascinated with the tarot and had gone on about it for weeks. It was the fifteenth trump of the major arcana, The Devil. Though this one was marked as Le Diable. It was a much cruder drawing from ones he had seen before. While still sporting the goatish mane and horns, the devil also had prodigious breasts and a massive phallus. There was a blue face in the devil’s midsection sticking its tongue out. Two chained demons, one male, one female, lay at a round pedestal at his feet.

"Ever felt your own aura trapped inside of you, unable to flow? Feels like drowning from the inside, doesn’t it?" The devil gasped, eyes widening in pure terror. "Tell me where the cursed stone is," Sir Jason demanded. For a few seconds, the devil gritted his teeth, trying to fight back. But his body shuddered, sweat beading at his temples. "A-alright! Alright! It's hidden… among the artifacts marked with the Sigma Symbol!" he spat out, voice strained. Immediately, Sir Jason withdrew his hand, and the devil gasped for air, his aura flowing freely again. He collapsed against the net, panting.

I asked. Lily stared at me, her voice low and grim. “Ethan Stark is the devil. And I think you just agreed to be the devil’s wife.” A chill ran down my spine. Was he that bad? I have seen him arrogant and ruthless but the devil? Have I mistakenly just sold myself to the devil?

Maud sighed. “This is true,” Agnes replied. “The Witches’ Mark—or Devil’s Mark as it was also known—could be anything from a wart or mole to any raised blemish on the skin, a birthmark for example. It was meant to represent the physical acknowledgement of a witch’s servitude to the Devil.” Maud appeared grim. “As sad an’ perversely interestin’ all this is, it ain’t clearin’ any of the fog around this mystery of ours.”
