When I looked up in surprise she continued, “Freddie loves you. In any other family, that would be more than enough. In any other family, approval wouldn't even be needed. But this family requires extra steps. Literally, in fact.”
She smiled at her own joke about stairs and the Stair Walk.
I stared at her for a moment, unable to say anything. She approved. Even though she couldn't say so publicly, she didn't hate me.
The Queen Mother pushed her barely half eaten pudding away. “I'm sure that's been more than enough time for Liam to chastise Freddie.” She stood slowly, using the table for support. “I recommend you go rescue the poor man.”
I smiled at her, copying her standing motion.
