Just come over and hear our side of things." "Dad?" I write back, surprised that he is reaching out. "What is it this time? Did you and Mom get caught breaking any more laws? " I expect him to make up some story or give some excuse for his behavior. Instead, he types back, "Please come home. I don't want you finding out on the news." Find out what?

“I’ve been expecting you to call.” I don’t answer immediately. I just let the silence hang between us, unsure of what to say. It feels wrong to start with the usual pleasantries, but I don’t know how to begin any other way. “I heard your father’s coming tomorrow,” I say finally, trying to keep my voice steady, though my heart is racing. “Is that true?”

He exclaimed loudly. “Yeah. I don't know where the guy is currently though but I'm sure my Dad is going to fill me in on the details later tonight. I thought to let you know,My Dad mentioned something about him planning to leave the city soon so this might be the best shot you've got. So what do you plan to do ?”. I asked.

He knows that his father doesn't want anyone to know the truth, but Malik does. " How did you know about this, Malik?" His father softly asks. Malik leans forward a bit and brings the phone closer to his mouth. " You said it when I was a kid, Dad. I had super great hearing abilities, I haven't lost them. " He smirks. Instead, he just looks guarded. "This isn't public news, obviously. But I trust you not to go to the press with it. I just...I wanted to let you know I understand how you feel. It's impossible not to feel helpless, watching our parents suffer."

I responded tapping my feet to the bed feeling more anxious. “How the hell do you mean you know nothing about the news getting to the press and even worse, to the public?” My father yelled over the phone. I felt my hands trembling at the sound of him yelling over the phone hearing about the news getting to everyone around town and even beyond. “I’m dead serious right now Dad” “I swear, I know nothing about any of that!!” I shot back on my end of the call. “Don’t play with me girl!” he said angrily over the phone.

“Put it on speaker. I want to hear what he has to say.” I take another deep breath as I accept the call and put it on speaker. Before I can even say anything, my father’s voice roars from the phone. “CONNOR! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!!” I don’t have to ask anything. I know what he is referring to. I run my hand through my hair and sigh. “Father…”

“Alright sir, I was just making sure you received it.” A pause then, “You sound like there's trouble in paradise. Didn't you give a proper speech?” “Just a parasite at the hospital. I’ll be fine, Noah, and hmm…” I paused, “I will be there, I guess my old man misses seeing my face.” Laughter erupted from the other end of the call and so did I until the call got disconnected. I shook my head. My father is a business tycoon. He taught me a thing or two. And when he says come home? You'd better hope you're walking into good news.
