Dark of Night Copyright 2019 Emily Goodwin Chapter One “What do you see when you look at this one?” The doctor holds up a card, showcasing an ink splotch that’s twisted and creepy, with eyes that follow you no matter where you go. I look at it, heart hammering away inside my chest. The mess of ink on the white paper reminds me of the monster that lurks in Nana and Papa’s basement, the one that tried to get Abby and Scott to go downstairs with it.

My fingers itched to touch it, but something inside me — something ancient and instinctual — warned me to be careful. Eventually, I reached for it. Slipped a finger under the flap and pulled out a single sheet of white paper. There were only a few lines scrawled in ink. Sharp, angular handwriting. No greeting. No signature. “The past never dies. It just finds a new face. Your sins are not forgotten.” P.S. — Peter Whitaker. The room spun. I gripped the edge of the counter, my knuckles turning white. My heart slammed against my ribs like it was trying to escape. I read the note again. And again. Every time, it made less sense and more terror.

"When it comes to gossip, nothing gets past me." At 11:00 PM, an understated luxury car pulled up at the school gates. Helena and Howard got out. Celeste and I had already set up snacks and drinks at the reading pavilion, waiting for them to settle down. After they arrived, Celeste cleared her throat. "Helena, what I'm about to tell you might sound unbelievable, but you have to believe me. I'm not crazy." In about ten minutes, Celeste laid out everything about my shadow. I chipped in with details to make the story as airtight as possible, hoping to make it seem as real as we could.

I chose to ignore the bad feeling in my stomach and look back at Alex, she still seems to be stressed, so I know there’s more information to come. “Alex...” she gazes up at me and waits “What else was there?” The whole time Ash has been silent, I wonder what is going through his mind but Alex answers before I can ask. “When I reached the bottom of the page, there was a small picture that said enlarge and when I enlarged it, the picture didn’t come up straight away, but same dreadful words come up instead. ‘I KNOW WHERE YOU ARE, AND I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. His wrinkled face looked like it was crawling with countless wriggling worms. I shuddered and stepped back, whispering to Silvia, "Good thing I've got you. This place is terrifying." She snorted and suddenly shoved me forward, straight toward George. With an icy laugh, she said, "This pretty boy will make a great offering. You're going to love him." Before I could react, George gestured, and several eerie puppets stepped forward to pin me down and drain my blood. A sharp bell rang out, echoing through the night.

He wanted to make sure whether or not it was being worn by a person, but the only thing he saw was the hook of the hanger that was on the clothes rack. Once again, he lowered the flashlight, and this was when he thought it best to run away. Below the polo shirt he saw that there was a long black skirt… But there were no feet!
