Aurelian stared at it. Then at him. “I don’t understand. Why would you give this to me?”
“Because it was never meant for me to keep,” the man said simply.
“Who are you?” Aurelian asked, taking the stone slowly, still searching his face for the catch.
The man’s hand opened and a book appeared in his palm, materializing out of nothing, its cover worn like it had traveled through many hands before reaching this one.
“If you want to know who I am,” he said, holding it out, “read this.”
