Rise. The dance told the story of a Luna greeting the moon, then calling her pack home. As the music grew stronger, so did I. I stopped thinking about my body. I stopped wondering how my stomach looked beneath the fitted belt or whether my hips moved too much. I let the music guide me. My full skirt spun around my legs. My curls loosened beneath the crown. I moved with power instead of apology. When the drums began, I struck my foot against the ground and turned sharply, extending one hand toward Mooncrest and the other toward Ironclaw.

Soon, a low, vibrating hum filled the air. He brought the device to my ankle and slid it upward. The tingling sensation surged through me, reaching deep within me. I felt like my whole body was on fire. "This is the second session. The vibration helps stimulate the energy within you and get it moving." Henry ran the vibrating toy from my ankle to my knee, then to my inner thighs. He held the device there, continuously circling the area. The intense vibrations kept stimulating me, making me tremble from head to toe. Even the ball beneath me began to vibrate, and my body started to rise and fall rapidly.

Then the speakers came alive with the opening chords of Hamilton Morgan’s “Love Don’t Care.” A spark lit in my chest. Perfect. I exhaled sharply, closed my eyes for half a second, and when I opened them again—I moved. The world faded. The judges disappeared. My limbs became weightless. Every beat, every rhythm, I met with fluid grace and sharp precision. I leaped. I twirled. I dropped into the beat like I was born for it. I wasn’t just dancing. I was telling a story. Felix sat there, watching me dance. From the look of things, he’d been bored all day maybe because none of the applicants had impressed him, but I guess I was.

“The place was on fire, Zane.” “Exactly! That’s what made it interesting. Most dances are all slow songs and fake smiles. This one had everything. Broken glass, falling lights, and a full-on royal entrance. Five stars. I’ll be telling this story for years.” I shot him a sideways glance, unimpressed. He grinned wider. “Okay, fine. You’re impossible to entertain.” “You came here just to tell me that?”

As they were on their way there, they chatted about the town event. “I was doing some dance choreography for the town’s Thanksgiving event, and I was wondering if you would love to do the couple’s dance with me?” She asked, making Christopher pull Hammer’s reins to a stop. “Are you sure you want me to dance with you in front of a hundred people? I mean, dancing at the barn, just us, is one thing. But in front of a crowd, that’s different.” “Well, it’s more like thousands. People from other towns join the festivities, but not to worry. We can rehearse after we do our homework and maybe work on some stage fright. The barn is the perfect spot for it. What do you say?”

We just had to demonstrate the dance once, let the students get familiar with the steps, and then they could practice on their own while we corrected them. Dancing with Henry should only take a few minutes, and I could get it over with quickly. However, once we started, I realized I had underestimated it. The music and dance steps for the rehearsal had been chosen long ago. The dance told the story of a young couple meeting and falling in love, their love passionate and vibrant. In a dance, physical contact was inevitable. The dancers needed to pour their emotions into the dance—that was the soul and essence of it.

“It doesn’t. But I can’t think of that now! I need to dress up!” I focused on my dance pieces. I had one with Sarah and some guys. It was a contemporary piece that told a story of a girl who was in love with a guy all her life, but he didn’t have eyes for her. He wanted another girl who was coveted by many others. I was the coveted girl. Sarah played the lead part. It was a difficult piece with many twists and turns and some lifting. It was acting, not just dancing. We got an encore at the end of our performance. Sarah performed brilliantly, and I was pretty sure I provided a good supporting performance.

Ren said before he leaned back to enjoy the show. Just like when we had our lessons, there were a few musicians to help play the song that went along with the dance. As I had just told Ren, the dance that Jeely and I will perform today is the Dance of the Fireflies. According to Jeely, it was a dance used to welcome prestigious guests and is supposed to bring about good fortune to the viewer.
