The Night Boss
A ripple of shock went through the journalists, pens halting mid-word.
“I thought it was just some twisted joke,” Rico admitted, shaking his head. “I told him, ‘Yeah, I’ll be loyal, I’ll wash every damn car you want, I don’t care.’ But he kept pressing. His eyes weren’t on me like a boss hiring some worker — no, he was testing me, trying to see if I’d break. And I didn’t know what loyalty meant in that room. I didn’t know it meant blood.”
He swallowed hard, his chest rising and falling. “To me, loyalty was just showing up to a job and keeping your head down. To them, loyalty meant taking a life if The Boss snapped his fingers.”
