The room was deathly silent except for the frantic beat of my heart in my ears. His low voice and the one from my dreams overlapped, weaving into a single key that unlocked my carefully built self-deception with a sharp click. He was Mr. Y—the man who sang off-key love songs to me at midnight, and the very same one who had chastised me relentlessly in the day. I stared at him. His handsome face was so close, and the usual coldness and distance were gone, replaced by a fragile, pleading vulnerability. The light in his eyes flickered like a candle tossed all night by a stormy wind.

My vision became clear, and I said with a hint of surprise, “Dr. Frost.” I remembered the scene from my dream and felt a flush of awkwardness. I had just been enrolled in college. Before the semester started, a staff member told me that the dormitories were under renovation, so I was assigned to an apartment by the college. Since moving in, I had trouble sleeping and kept having many dreams. My neighbor, Steven Frost, was a psychologist, so I went to his clinic for help. I had not expected to have such an intense dream during the session. When I thought about the dream I had, my face grew warm again.

She doesn’t ask—the old woman, I mean—but I figure she might be curious about this young stranger in her house who is acting weird. “I started having these weird dreams after I met Hunter…” I begin, noting how the bandage on my forehead has disfigured from the scrubbing. “…and there’s the unease.” I grasp my shirt’s neckline in a fist, kneading the latter onto my chest as if trying to weaken the knot tied in it. “I feel… something bad will happen again. I know it. Hunter… he’s going to do something.”

The entire night was filled with surreal and fragmented dreams—none of them forming a coherent story. In one of the dreams, Miranda cradled a chubby, smiling baby in her arms.
