THE HEIR MUST CHOOSE BEFORE THE SUCCESSION. I read it twice. Then I looked at Kai. "What heir?" His face had gone completely still. "Lena." "What?" He didn't answer. "Kai." His eyes lifted to mine. "The succession isn't about me." The words came slowly. "It's about whoever carries the First House blood." My stomach dropped. "You mean me." Before he could respond, the lights in the passage went out. A door slammed somewhere behind us. Kai grabbed my hand. "Run."

Ash nods looking sad, “He didn’t exactly talk about his feelings with us. He was the strong one, the King. We didn’t see his pain; we only felt our own. Seth might be a dick, but he really went off the rails when she died. He’d been really close to our mother, not that we weren’t, but they had a different connection somehow.” Ash reflects, and she nods, “But if he changes the order of succession, then we’ll do our best when the time comes. But it might never happen, we are immortal after all.” Kai nods, “Overall, I think we feel good about telling him about you and our plan to give up the house to be with you properly. We love you.” She nods,

"He was going to try anyway, and I said, ' Good luck, ' I didn't even trust his chances! Yet somehow, all it took was six months. Six months and you agreed to fuck a man, you had looked up to as a father!" I visibly flinched. Arthur moved then. He didn't look at my father. He walked past me with a predatory gait and calmly closed the office door. I heard the click of the lock, sealing the three of us inside and shutting out the rest of the world. He walked back to his desk and laid a single document on the table: The Succession Agreement. "What is this?" I breathed, my voice barely audible.

My partner was an Alpha, and I just rejected her? A few minutes later, my cell phone rang. I trembled as I swiped the screen to unlock my phone. It was my father asking me where I was and to get ready for the Alpha succession ceremony. After a few more minutes of rest, I struggled to get up and leave the crappy broom closet. The whole thing had been so frustrating. I swore that once I became an Alpha, I would make Rose my woman and torture her until she knelt and begged me. [Rose's P.O.V.]

I’d rather he know exactly what he’s walking into.” “And you think he doesn’t?” “I think people can change their minds.” Julian glanced between us. “Especially before something becomes permanent.” The table had gone noticeably quieter. Adrian’s jaw shifted, but before he could respond, Harlan placed his glass down with a firm click. “My decision about the succession has already been made,” he said, looking directly at Julian. “Adrian is taking over. That isn’t changing because the wedding happens next month or next year.”

He frowned deeply, turned on his heel, and marched toward the door, muttering under his breath, “Motherfucker.” ‎ ‎I laughed again as the door slammed behind him. I knew I was right — Adrian could read me too well. I wanted Ren. I was going to have Ren. Married or not. ‎ ‎Then I caught myself. ‎I exhaled slowly, running a hand through my hair. 'You just talked about fate,' I reminded myself silently, 'and now you’re trying to steal someone on their wedding day.' ‎ ‎I smiled darkly at my reflection. ‎Still… I wasn’t going to miss this for the world.
