~Winter~ Anyway, we all gathered in the garden, and the atmosphere was filled with joy and laughter. Summer pulled me away from Noah, who went to join the men as they prepared for something exciting. Curious, I asked, "What are they playing?" My gaze followed Noah's direction just as I reached the group of women gathered on the picnic mat, where children gleefully chased bubbles in the air, and their nannies kept a watchful eye on them. He asked, “May we talk?” Flora nodded her head. “Sure.” Solomon and Flora headed towards the back of the house where a huge waterfall fell endlessly. The water ran into a slowing river with a deep dark pool in the center of the pit for swimming. It was calm enough to take a dive in the hot summer.

Eighteen Months Later (Mountbatten, Summer of 1862) ~Penny~ A tear escaped my eye as I gazed at the bright blue skies stretching above the moorland. The wild open space of the moorland opened up to a meandering river. Walking down the gentle slope of the well-worn path to the gushing water, I settled onto the bank. The low resonant hum of the water currents did little to calm my mind. Laying against the comforting heat of a sun-warmed stone, I fondly placed my hand on my stomach, trying to fight the tight knot in my throat as tears pricked at my eyes.

Her dad clapped me on the shoulder and said, “Take care of her, kid.” “I will,” I said. They left right after lunch, luggage in the truck, waving from the driveway. Sophie stood on the porch until the car was out of sight. When she turned back, her face was set. “Okay,” she said. “Now it’s really our summer.” The bonfire started after dinner. Noah got it going, and the whole group drifted out to the yard. The air had cooled, but the humidity stayed, thick and heavy. Music played from Noah’s speaker. Maya danced with her fling from town. Leo pulled me into a slow circle near the edge of the light.

A light breeze rustled the leaves, and it carried that familiar earthy scent of summer afternoons along with faint traces of mangoes still ripening on the branches. I climbed onto the hammock tied between two tree trunks and let it sway gently beneath me. It creaked softly as I settled in, pulling out my phone. “There’s a swing beside the green house.” He looked up, his eyes finding the glass outdoor house with several varieties of beautiful flowers that stood not very far away. He walked at a moderate pace, and they finally arrived at the greenhouse, bent the corner and the swing was before them. They took a seat on both swings, their bodies facing opposite ways. “I let Summer go to the restroom, so I could come here.” “I am not scared of Sullivan,” Blaine said, and he turned when he felt her watching him. She looked away again, and he saw her shoulders sag as she brought her hands forward and held them together in her lap.
