With a firm, downward tug, Marc pulled the fabric completely off, leaving Julian bare in the dim light of the high rise suite. Dinner at the mansion feels like stepping into a fancy restaurant I don’t belong in. The dining room’s massive, with a long oak table, crystal glasses, and a chandelier casting soft light. The smell of roasted chicken and garlic mashed potatoes fills the air, but my stomach’s knotted, not hungry. Jess and I spent an hour getting ready, mostly because she insisted we “make an impression.” I’m in a fitted black dress, sleeveless, with a low neckline that’s just shy of bold, paired with silver hoop earrings and my hair loose in waves.

"I still feel a little, obsolete, I guess, not wearing anything on a day like Halloween," I say, seeing as how many of the other teens in school are a little more special looking with colors they don't usually have placed into their attire. That's just the tame side of things, while other teens have gone all-out with the constumes. There's a T-rex and a fariy queen chatting and walking by, and in one of the doorways I can spot a teen in a bee costume. There's even a teacher who has a crazy-scientist wig on, who is merrily talking and holding up a pumpking for another faculty member, dressed in the star and moon robe of a wizard.

Valene: Everyone began to arrive in short order, looking exquisite, their vassals close behind displayed in their required attire of black tops and matching bottoms. We weren’t necessarily allowed to get too dressy though some vassals managed to sneak in a piece of jewelry or two. We weren’t worthy of inhuman’s attention, so most times we did not garner it, but sometimes…rare times, a vassal would catch the eye of one, and if the price was right…well, things could be arranged though not openly; this was a taboo practice after all. At least, that was the rumor. It was mainly those who pledged their lives to the inhumans that most tried to attract them.

Steven gave me the back story. "Oh, I see," absorbing the information. "You should watch out for him. He's the craziest among his clique of friends," he advised. "Copy that," I said, saving the information into my mental archive. "Also, the theme of the party is: SEE NO EVIL." "What?" I asked confused. "It's a costume party, where you play dress-up with suggestive clothes and facial masks. Your stylist will see to it that you look perfect," he assured me.

Davina's POV: The air backstage at the Devil's Club was thick with the usual chaotic blend of hairspray, perfume, and nervous energy. The other dancers, their bodies already adorned in various stages of glittering undress, moved with a practiced ease, adjusting straps and applying last-minute touches of makeup. I moved amongst them like a ghost, my new costume – a skimpy, sequined number in a garish shade of purple that was lying on a velvet stool. My reflection in the mirror was a stranger: haunted eyes, pale skin, a stark contrast to the carefully applied glamour around me.

Yet, Penny's striking outfit outshone her effortlessly, rendering Tabitha somewhat insignificant in comparison. Tabitha realized her dwindling spotlight, and embarrassment ignited into anger. "How can you wear counterfeit goods to an event like this? How pretentious. Did you sneak in here to climb the social ladder?" Penny let out a soft chuckle as she shifted her gaze to Tabitha's dress. It was an ethereal shade of blue adorned with a central painting. It seemed oddly familiar to Penny, so she inquired, "What brand is your dress?" Her question prompted laughter from Tabitha and the onlookers.

“I said I would.” Kai reached the bottom of the stairs and walked toward her, stopping just a few feet away. "Take off the coat,” he murmured, eyes dropping to her coat. Lila’s fingers trembled slightly as she unbuttoned it and let it fall from her shoulders, revealing the sexy dress that clung to curves. Kai’s dark blue eyes darkened further as he took her in. “You chose a dangerous dress tonight,” he said, voice low. "It's hot."
