The dining room looked like Thanksgiving instead of a simple family dinner. Roasted chicken scented with lemon and thyme sat at the center of the table, flanked by a bowl of mashed potatoes swirled with garlic butter, glistening glazed carrots, and a crisp salad. I’d changed exactly as Mom asked. The black dress was sleeveless, fitted tight through the ribs, and skimmed just above my knees — longer than the nightie, but still short. No bra. No panties.

Tabby gives a sigh, and moves onto the next rack. “Wait, what was that,” I ask her, puzzled by her reaction, “You liked the first gown, I know you did! Why aren’t you trying it on?” “I don’t want to talk about it,” she says, embarrassed, “I’ll just try one of these! This one is great!” She holds up a gown that is not only formless, but obviously missing crystals on the bodice. The tag reads, “FINAL CLEARANCE: 75% OFF”. “Absolutely not,” I tell her, putting the gown back on the rack, “You are not going to get married in that awful dress. I won’t allow it. You’re going to try on the one you like. Right now!”

Still, I proceeded to do what he said. My fingers trembled as they found the edges of my jersey and pulled them off. The air felt colder against my skin as I stood in place, like one awaiting sentence for something he knew absolutely nothing about. What sort of punishment starts like this?
