I yell, my breathing heavy and my heart trembling from the words that leave my mouth. To my surprise, he chuckles. And he takes a step forward. This time, I don’t move back. I let him close the space between us and his harsh breath blows on my face as he speaks in a low, challenging voice. "Stepbrother? Is that who I am to you? Swear to me that’s who you see me as and I’ll take what you say. I won’t ever touch you again."

I cleared my throat. "As much as I want to say no… you’re family. Go ahead." He shrugged—but his words cut deep. I didn’t know whether to be happy he considered me family, or disturbed by it… especially given the circumstances. "Are you working for the mafia too?" I knew I was crossing a line—talking about the mafia was as taboo as the feelings I had for my stepbrother.

I can’t just cut off a generational hate like this. I wrap the towel around my body, then freeze as I realize that I actually had no clothing here. Ah, fuck sakes! Walking over to the bed, I sit down and sigh at my pathetic predicament. I asked him. His stride halted and he looked at me. "This is our city, Evara." He said and paused. I blinked in confusion and darted my eyes around. "Yes, I don't like this part of our land at night. It feels too spooky." I told him. His gaze remained fixed on me as he shook his head. "Your brothers!" He pointed his finger at himself. "Are. Mafia. The mafia, baby sister." He said with his calm deep voice.

I muttered. She walked over and patted my shoulder, her tone shifting. "Your stepbrother's a bitch. He didn't even bother explaining himself, acting like some jealous ex-or worse, like an alpha king. He was completely out of line, and he needs to be confronted." I arched a brow at her. She had no idea who my stepbrother really was. "Have you ever heard of Christopher Gravemoor?" I asked quietly. Her eyes widened. "You mean Christopher Gravemoor? The hottest bachelor alive? The mafia king with those eyes and those arms-oh my God..." Her voice trailed into a dreamy sigh before snapping back to shock. Her gaze locked on mine, realization hitting her hard.

I welcomed her in a bear hug as she sat on my bed… “So…” “So what?” “Where’s he?” She asked smiling widely “Who?” “You know who I’m talking about…Your hot mafia stepbrother” “Please don’t” “What? I left out the specifics about who Dante was, sticking to generalities about a guy I couldn’t seem to stop thinking about—a guy who also happened to infuriate me at every turn. “Sounds like he’s in your head,” Sofia said when I finished. “You think?” I muttered, glaring at the ceiling. “So, what’s the problem?” I hesitated again, the words catching in my throat. Finally, I blurted out, “He’s my stepbrother.” There was a long pause. “Wait,” she said slowly. “Stepbrother?” “Yes.” “Like… related by marriage stepbrother?” “Yes,” I said again, my voice quieter now.

"And out of my bed." The door shut behind him before I could speak. That night, I lay awake staring at the ceiling, my pulse trembling in my throat. This was my life now. The mansion. The Mafia. The wolves. And three stepbrothers who didn't just want to protect me— They wanted to own me.
