My fingers trembled, the rifle slipping from my grip and clattering to the forest floor.
The beast snarls, a low sound that vibrates through my teeth.
It wants to finish them, to end the threat with a single swipe of its massive claws.
I could feel its claws digging into my mind, trying to prick the thin thread of my humanity.
I close my eyes, breathing hard, and picture her, her smile, her eyes, the way she whispered, “Don’t be afraid to run.”
