I’d failed them. Then a new voice cut through, sharp and young, laced with a Brooklyn accent thick as plantains: “Yo, get your hands off my tia!” A figure burst from the alley’s shadows—a girl, maybe seventeen, Puerto Rican like us, her braids flying, a machete in one hand, a glowing tablet in the other. Her eyes were Javier’s eyes, brown and fierce, her jaw set like Elena’s. She slashed the river, the machete sparking, severing a tendril. Ichor sprayed, hissing. “I’m Rosa Vasquez,” she spat, “Javier’s niece, Sofia’s sobrina. You want the family? You go through me.”

(Spanish Translation: Fucking asshole, Do you have anger issues or something?!")

She looks up at me with big brown eyes while waves of long thick brown hair fall all around her and even though she has showered since arriving here, she looks skinny and unkept. "Tia." Her voice is so small and insanely cute despite the sadness I can feel coming off of her. "What's your name?" She suddenly asks me throwing me off course. I give her a small smile as I lean down until I'm a little closer to her. "My name is, Robbie." She smiles as I answer her and her little cheeks light up.

Her eyes met mine and she looked down at my dress for a second then looked me in the eye. “Water for me,” she said, and I nodded. I looked at Diego and Giovanni, and they nodded at the wine bottle. I poured them both their glasses before turning to Tania, who was already ordered by Mr. James to get the bottles for me. I poured the glasses as required, and I couldn’t help but smile when I noticed that one of the girls extended her leg as I passed beside her. I smiled and passed her leg with ease, not even touching it, and I could swear that her eyes hardened. However, I couldn’t blame her, her partner, regardless of what their relationship status was, had his eyes on me, and I could tell that
