She said my mother was a hero.” Jenny’s nasal passages felt sore. The soreness started in the nasal turbinates, spread to the bridge of her nose, and then to the lower edge of her eyes. Tears welled up in her lacrimal glands, but didn’t flow out. Over the past three days, her lacrimal glands had been completely depleted. The remaining tears were only enough to moisten the mucous membranes at the lower edge of her eyes, not enough to form a single tear droplet.
