Not long after, Brandon arrived carrying a leather suitcase. Luna and I were forced to the edge of the deck with the endless ocean behind us. I had always suffered from thalassophobia—a fear of deep water—and my heart raced with anxiety. When Luna saw Brandon, her eyes instantly lit up. She sobbed, "Bran, save me! They've been hurting me!" Her upper body was nearly naked, and her face was badly swollen, truly looking miserable. "Here's the three million dollars you asked for. Release them now!" Brandon demanded.

Then I deleted it again. "Focus," I hissed. My hand dove into my bag. I didn't even have to look. I grabbed the TENS unit and slid it under the fabric of my trousers, pressing the nodes against the meat of my right thigh. I dialed it up until the muscle physically buckled. Zap. The world went white for a second. The fog in my brain snapped back. The barbed wire on the page settled into recognizable words. I typed. Entry 001: 4,500 USD - Infrastructure Maintenance.
