SAMANTHA’S POV The silence in the room was suffocating. Dad stood there like a wall, Mum beside him with her arms crossed, both staring at me like I was a stranger. Wesley’s arm was still around my shoulders, warm and possessive. Donald lingered in the doorway, papers in hand, looking like he wanted to disappear but wouldn’t leave me. “I said we’re packing your things,” Dad repeated, voice low and final. “This university experiment is over.”

No one mentions triple Lutzes. No one looks at my knee brace with that particular combination of pity and morbid curiosity I have been navigating for three months. They are just college freshmen worrying about textbook prices and whether professors actually take attendance. It is so ordinary it almost hurts. After both pizzas have been reduced to crusts and grease-soaked paper plates, Americus turns her full attention to me. "Okay, mystery roommate. What is your actual thing?" I poke at a piece of pizza crust. "Nothing much." "Absolute lies."

You live with your five friends, in the college apartment. Where you enjoy each other's company. Plus all five, like you secretly. Jeke is very romantic and stubborn with you. Lucas is playful and in love with you. Nicolas is serious and possessive of you. Henri is obsessed and jealous and Levi is shy and affectionate. You are in the living room of the apartment watching a movie, when you heard the sounds of footsteps in the door, which indicated that the boys had arrived.

"Avis, could you grab my body wash? It’s on my desk. I'm busy showering; I can't go over to get it." On the balcony, my roommate, Linda Lowe, was indulging in her cold shower, basking in the sunlight streaming through the windows. Our dorm wasn’t on a high floor, and anyone passing below could easily glance up to enjoy the view. But Linda didn’t care. Far from it—she seemed to revel in it, swaying her body with exaggerated movements as though she couldn’t wait to flaunt herself.

“Maybe when your other roomie gets back we can have a girl’s night. Hopefully, she’s friendlier than the frozen twins.” Turner and Jessie, my other two roommates, weren’t twins in the literal sense. They just had the same resting bitch face and frigid attitude. I’d tried to introduce myself to them, but they turned away without a word and vanished into their respective bedrooms. Natasha was my fourth and final roommate. She was out of town for a few days visiting family, but she was supposed to be back by Wednesday. I crushed my now empty can and tossed it in the bin beside the kitchen island. “We can give it a try.”

**************** I walked inside my new apartment, it was a total mess, it was so hard for me to live in this mess, but the rent was too expensive to rent a whole apartment by myself. So I had to choose, expensive apartment, Or a bad nasty roommate? “Did you buy milk?” my new roommate said, I shook my head, “no milk for you then” she replied, I only nodded, “couldn’t you at least wash your own dishes?” I asked, looking at all the nasty plates on the round table. “Nope!” She said, smirking, her boyfriend laughed, they were sitting on the sofa, still cuddling, “how are we supposed to eat?” I asked, she shrugged, I rolled my eyes, I couldn’t go and sleep leaving all the mess behind!

What I could see of his hair was dark, maybe short on the side and longer on top. Maybe he’ll know of someone searching for a roommate. “Well,” I cleared my throat. “My roommate bailed on me at the last minute, it’s too late to get a dorm room and I have nowhere to live.” “Damn, that sucks. Did she at least give you your money back?” I nodded reluctantly. He leaned forward and sat down his coffee. “Maybe your luck isn’t so bad?” he said. “Our third party was suspended before school started and we’re looking for another one. Cheaper rent since it’s split three ways, and it’s right across from campus.”

"We're one roommate short. Once someone moves in we'll have to share the kitchen with them." "I haven't had a roommate since college. It sounds fun." Only a rich person who isn't forced to live with a roommate would think it sounds fun. "Yeah, it sure is. If you find sharing public spaces with a person who steals your snacks and doesn't wipe under the toilet every time fun, then yes you should try it." "The Moores have a family rule. We never pay rent only mortgages." I roll my eyes. "Of course you do." Does he hear the shit coming from his mouth?

I was curious. I wondered, if Taranis has a girlfriend then why couldn’t he just share the room with her? And instead I could live with her roommate. A part of me wondered what that roommate would be like and if it would even be a good environment for studying but anything is better than a guy roommate! I’ll take it! I will take that chance, no I will literally jump at that chance.

CASSANDRA BATES THE DOWNSIDE OF staying at someone’s place meant tolerating any visitors she brought to crash for the night. And while I loved my roommate, God bless her, hearing her all night getting pummeled over and over by some guy she picked from the bar was something I couldn’t endure for another night. The thought of moving out crossed my mind but then again, the high rent New York had to offer for a single apartment discouraged me against doing so.
