"It’s leaving." ​The Auditor of the Soul ​A beam of clinical, white light descended from the aircraft, solidifying into a staircase. Down stepped a man who looked nothing like the flamboyant villains of the past. He wore a perfectly tailored suit of non-descript grey, his face a symmetrical mask of bureaucratic neutrality. He carried a tablet that didn't glow; it hummed with the terrifying weight of a Ledger. ​"Nora Davis," the man said, his voice devoid of malice or passion. "I am the Senior Auditor for the Reality Stabilization Fund. You have been found in violation of the Law of Conservation of Narrative Energy."

I find three things I missed before. The first is in the financial records, in the footnotes. There's a reference to a third-party auditor whose name appears only in the footnote, not in the main document. Standard practice requires the auditor's name to appear where the audited figures are. A footnote-only reference means the auditor was either added after the main document was drafted or deliberately hidden where a non-specialist wouldn't look. I write it down.
