There was nothing about Damon Bane worth losing sleep over, I told myself with complete conviction at approximately midnight, lying wide awake in the dark, thinking about him.
He was the enemy. The man who held my life in his hands and had made very clear exactly how much empty weight that life carried. On the battlefield, I was better used as bait. In a room, I was seen as a problem. In a hallway in the dark, I was something to be taunted, laughed at, and ignored.

His voice in the dark was grave. Slightly amused.
I pressed the heels of my hands against my eyes and sighed.
