"It's been so long. Yet, Cherilyn won't let me touch her. "She must still be hung up on that dead guy. Say, do you think she's staying chaste for him, or is she just that innocent? "My initial plan was just to have some fun. But I never thought it would drag on for so long. I'm not willing to let it end like this." My heart sank. Instead of barging in, I peeked through the gap. Benjamin was seated on the sofa with his legs crossed. He held a glass of wine in one hand, which he downed in one gulp. He looked nothing like someone suffering from stomach cancer.

The silver Mercedes pulling up behind Harvey's Maybach signaled that its passengers were also attending the Technology Creation and Sharing Summit's welcome banquet. The first person to step out was Benjamin, the heir of the Jones family. Dressed in an all-white suit, he sported a slicked-back undercut, his dark hair neatly styled on top. His skin was smooth, his expression perpetually unimpressed, as if nothing in the world could bother him. Dark circles framed his half-lidded eyes, giving him a permanently sleep-deprived look. A black stud earring glinted in one ear, and a matching black ring pierced his lower lip.

We all knew that whatever it was the doctor had to tell us probably wasn’t good. “So, Benjamin,” the doctor started. “As you know, we managed to repair your heart. But your heart has sustained a lot of damage.” “Just cut to the chase,” Benjamin said, but his voice was light. “Lay it on me.” “I appreciate your candor,” the doctor smiled at Benjamin. Then he put down his clipboard. “We’re going to release you in about a week or so, but my records indicate that you currently live alone? Is that correct?” “That’s correct,” Benjamin said. Apparently Benjamin had tossed Beatrice’s mother to the curb as soon as he’d learned about the kidnapping. He wanted nothing to do with either of them.
