His thumb brushed away a tear, his touch so light it made my skin tingle. "You’re not a failure," he whispered. "You’re the bravest person I’ve ever met. You took on an entire Academy, a Council of Alphas, and a nest of rogues just to protect your brother. That’s more Alpha than anything I’ve ever done." I stared at him, my heart doing a strange, fluttering dance. "You mean that?"

Eighteen years ago….. Kaleb Luthor hurried on. He was on an errand for his father, walking down the gravel path that cut from his house when his eyes caught something. He stopped and stared for a moment. It was his sister's friend, Sasha. Sasha Sullivan. She was hanging upside down from an old tree, her skinned knees hooked over a low thick branch. She was swinging back and forth, so her long braids dangled like ropes. The whole time she hummed while she blew the biggest pink bubble he had ever seen. He didn't know you could hum and blow bubble gum at the same time. As he walked past her, there was a loud pop.

He played nice opening the car door for me to enter before turning around to enter through the other side. He stretched his hand to the backseat and landed a huge sum of money on my laps. I beamed with surprise. “What for?” I raised my brows on a high level. “This is a compensation for the email you sent to me,” he snarled . “ You’re paying me for sabotaging your brother. He’s your brother for Christ sake,” I snapped furiously. “ Half-brother. Besides, I don’t care,” he hissed, “the only thing important to me is that I’m the rightful owner of the inheritance . Period.”

Adrian's hand finds my elbow, steadying me. "What are you so afraid of?" Your best friend's name… his face, his reaction and the conversation I've been dreading for seven years.
