"The Palate doesn't favor stories," the merchant said, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "Only efficiency." "But we do," Lia said, stepping forward. "And we believe you might have something that speaks that language." The merchant’s gaze lingered on Bima’s face, searching. He saw the notebook, the determination in their eyes, the faint, almost imperceptible scent of something other than the Palate clinging to them.

Those small refusals became the mortar we poured into the cracks. During a quiet Saturday, Kael and I walked the market as it wound down. We bought bread and watched a merchant count the day’s coins. He looked up and recognized Kael from an old ranger’s escort. “You’re making things strange,” the man said with a chuckle. “People are shifting their wallets.” Kael grinned. “We’re trying.” “It’s good,” the merchant said. “I’d rather sell bread than keep secrets.” The little exchanges mattered. At first, the red-nosed merchant had spoken amiably with her, occasionally directing winks and smirks of conspiracy, if not particularly subtle, at her obviously disinterested fellow traveler. The merchant had taken great interest in introducing the young man to all the passengers, as well as each of the innkeepers they had dealt with during the three-day journey, as her nephew.

He then saw a tall middle aged man behind a young man, his build was no different from a human being but he felt respect. He shook his head hastily, 'What's going on! He's human! Why am I showing respect?'. “it would be 700 gold coins per sack!” he then heard the fat merchant spoke. “W-what?! Isn't it a bit too much?!” the Dog Tribes leader shouted in shock. 'You blood sucking monster!' he cursed.

He can struggle all he wants, but nothing is getting him out of my trap. The merchant stares at me like I'm the monster in his worst nightmare, and he's not wrong. Max stands behind him, rolling his shoulders, while Landen leans against a nearby trunk, boots half-buried in dead leaves, watching everything with that lazy look that fools people into thinking he's harmless. I squat before the merchant and peel the gag from his mouth. The first thing he does is scream at the top of his lungs until he starts coughing. Pathetic. He thrashes like a cornered animal, a rabbit, but even prey fights harder than this.
