“Why not just kill yourself, you ugly whore?”
I don’t think I could count the amount of times I’ve been told such by the people of my pack.
The man who bumped into me sent me an ugly sneer before walking away.
“Asshole.” I mumbled under my breath.
Being the only omega of the pack meant I had to endure abuse and mistreatments from the members of Dark Silver Pack. My parents had died when I was young so it meant nobody could defend me from all the harsh treatments.
I’d always hoped for a day when I would find a mate. I let out a breath as I made my way through the hall. It was the Moonlight Festival, an auspicious night when everybody gathered to celebrate all the prosperity and peace we’ve achieved in the pack.
“Sorry.” I mumbled underneath my breath as another person bumped into my shoulder again.
The hall had been decorated just for this night. The place had an air of festivity that got every single person in a celebrative mood. I could almost forget all my sorrows and pain.
“Attention.”
The sound of a mic drew everybody’s attention. We all turned to look at the source of the sound. I held my breath when my eyes fell on the Alpha.
Callen Everdeen.
Handsome was an understatement when trying to describe him. He had the face of an angel and the body of a Greek god himself. I had to stop myself from drooling. It was hard to take my eyes off him.
He was dressed in a tailored suit that seemed to hug him in just the right places. He tapped on the mic a little and brought it to his mouth.
“Esteemed members of this pack. I welcome you all to the Moonlight Festival. May the blessings of the Moon Goddess be upon this night of festivities.”
He paused, his eyes searching through the crowd. I held my breath when his gaze landed on me. It seemed to linger for quite a while.
“And may the odds be in our favor for years and years.”
The whole hall erupted into applause and cheers. Callen had that charisma in him. He could draw the attention of a room effortlessly. He had the looks for it too.
I could never talk to him though. The Alpha wasn’t someone who would bother talking with the likes of me. As much as it hurt to think about it, I would have to be content with admiring him from a distance.
I let out a sigh and made my way to the food table. I grabbed a glass of wine and brought the cup to my lips.
“Yes, I agree to be your mate.”
I turned back just in time to watch a couple’s mating bond blossom. The man was staring at his partner with love in his eyes.
He pulled her closer to him and placed a kiss on her lips. The whole room awed at their heartwarming display.
As happy as I was for them, it was hard to ignore the pang in my chest as I thought about how I was yet to find one.
I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up not able to get one. I was nothing but the unwanted omega of Dark Silver Pack that nobody wanted.
Just as I was about to walk away, I bumped into someone. I watched with horror as the drink spilled on another woman’s shirt.
“What the actual fuck?” She yelled, anger in her eyes.
“I—I’m so s—sorry. I—”
“Can you stop stuttering, you retarded fool? Why the hell did you spill your drink on me? You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”
She was fuming with anger and I was getting the bad feeling that things were about to get ugly. I could feel my heart beating fast against my chest. My whole body seemed to shake with fear.
“What’s going on here?”
I turned to see Alpha Callen staring at us. My heart beat skyrocketed as I stared back at him.
“This foolish omega spilled her drink on me.”
I expected him to start berating me but he remained silent, his sole gaze fixed on me. I found myself unable to look away as well. All eyes were fixed on us but I didn’t care. All I could think of was Callen.
My whole body began to feel hot and it was like all my senses had gone on autopilot. My eyes widened as the realization dawned on me.
Mate.
This was finally it. I’d finally found my mate after all these years of waiting. The day had finally arrived.
I expected to see some kind of reaction on his face but all I got was a cold, impassive look. That was—odd. Did he not feel anything?
“You’re my mate.” The words left my mouth before I could hold back.
His expression tightened at those words. I did not expect the look of disgust that crept onto his face.
He let out a frustrated sigh and stepped closer to me. The girl wasn’t ranting anymore but I didn’t care for any of that. I was only focused on Callen.
“This must be some cruel joke by the moon goddess.”
It felt like someone had kicked me right in the stomach. I never expected to hear those words come from his mouth.
“I—I don’t—” I bit on my lip, trying to force the tears down. All eyes were fixed on me and I could feel the judgement in their stares.
“I think this has gone on long enough so I’ll save you the stress.”
He closed the distance between us. He was so close that I could feel the warmth of his body. His eyes however were icy and emotionless.
“I, Callen Everdeen, reject you as my mate and Luna.”
The pain was unbearable. My heart had just been ripped into a thousand pieces. Callen didn’t look one bit remorseful. I could feel my body shutting down as black spots dotted my vision.
“You can go ahead and die for all I care.”
Those were the last words I heard before collapsing into the darkness
Lana’s POVThe wind carried the first warning before we even saw the sky shift. A low, rolling pressure swept through the path ahead, bending the treetops and scattering loose soil across the trail. Kael stopped beside me, his hand tightening instinctively around the strap of his pack. Mara glanced over her shoulder, expression sharpening with the sort of alertness that never meant anything good.“We’re close,” Bastion murmured. “Too close. The air shouldn’t feel like this unless something ahead has been disturbed recently.”“Disturbed how?” Dren asked, hugging his coat tighter around himself.“Either by us…” Warren said, “or by someone who got here before we did.”My pulse kicked. “You mean someone else is after the vault?”Warren didn’t answe
Lana’s POVThe Assembly met in a building that smelled of old wood and the careful confidence of men who had decided the fate of towns for generations. We had built our case with witnesses, with ledgers, with quiet demonstrations that taught councils to be suspicious of gifts. Now the work felt grimly formal: we would bring evidence before a body packed with men who guarded reputation like an old Sunday shirt.Warren had spent weeks preparing the legal framing. He’d taught witnesses to hold their memory steady and to avoid the rhetorical jaws that Assemblymen used to twist facts. Mara had trained them like performers, coaching voice and cadence so that the testimony would land in the stony ears of magistrates. Bastion and Maris had worked with scholars to authenticate artifacts and provide neutral explanations of their effects. The hermitage had become a laboratory for truth. We arrived early, sun slanting through the Assembly’s high windows. The building’s wood seemed softer up close
Lana’s POVWe had thought Marek’s exposure would weaken the network in neat, predictable ways. Instead, it fractured into unpredictable pieces that tested our patience and forced us to think like gardeners not generals. The ledger we’d taken from his house had been a key, yes, but keys open doors and reveal rooms you didn’t know existed. It pulled back curtains that let other things breathe. One evening, while sorting testimony and cross-referencing courier runs, Sera found a notation in the ledger we had overlooked: a list of names marked with small initials that corresponded to guilds — not buyers but facilitators. One of the names popped in my mind — “Rhett of the Glassworks.” At first the name sounded like a piece of the artisan world, but Sera had a way of squinting at details and seeing the edges of mischief.“Rhett makes glassware,&r
Lana’s POVSpring came stubbornly, the country reluctant to change all at once. It arrived the way it always did—slow green, mud, and the first splatter of lambing in the barns. The hermitage smelled like peat fires and paper. The map we'd been stitching together grew layered with not just places but names, the faces of people who gave testimony and those who risked small betrayals of their own comfort to do what was right. Our campaign had become less about a single, dramatic takedown and more about making the truth cumbersome for those who relied on whisper networks. We put Elders on record, coaxed a courier to keep a receipt, and trained witnesses to recount events with calm precision. Each small success loosened the manipulators’ grasp; each public inquiry tightened the light. One morning, as panes of glass trembled under a dull wind, an envelope arrived for us at the hermitage. Inside was a thin, nervy note: *We’re watching the Assembly. Aldis has moved to the coast. He’s meeting
