~ ANNIKA ~ After the awkward encounter, I chose to pretend it never happened. Fortunately, Angelo's business trip would keep him away for a week, giving me a much-needed break from his overbearing presence. I knew he'd resume his annoying habit of following me around like a shadow upon his return. The highlight of this week was Jonathan's homecoming. Coming here makes me feel close to them.” Jessica felt a wave of sadness wash over her. “I’m so sorry, Brenda. That’s awful.” Brenda nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Thank you, Jessica. This place helps me heal, just like it’s helping you.” They walked in silence for a while, each lost in their thoughts. Adam's P.O.V I’m a fucking idiot. That has to be it. Why else would I have agreed to Stephanie’s revenge plan if I weren’t one? I didn’t need this sort of distraction in my life. Especially now that I’m just barely managing to forget about Tracy. I’ll admit, the benefits of agreeing to this little contract marriage were sort of beneficial to me, they weren’t what engineered my decisions. Loneliness did.

She even begged me to lend her a side account of mine. Since I thought of her as family, it was only natural that I hoped she would live well, so I hadn't hesitated to agree. Never would I have imagined that she would use my account to deliberately create enemies, then seize the opportunity to have me horrifically killed in front of everyone! When I next opened my eyes, I had returned to a familiar room. It seemed that I had gone back in time to the day that little girl's family sought me out at my company. The sheer delight and relief at getting a second chance at life welled in me, but I had no time to bask in the feeling.

Which is also something that I restarted writing as soon as I was back from my trip with Spencer. Turns out I decided to start everything from scratch. The draft I had from several years ago had nothing to do with who I am now, and it’s not a story I want to tell anymore. So, one night, I decided to write down some new ideas for plots and characters that I want to bring to life.

I crawl into bed. My phone buzzes with a text from an unknown number. "You're still a coward. I'm almost disappointed. I thought rebirth might have given you a spine. -EB" I stare at the message, my heart stopping. Ethan Black. How does he know?
