He searched for a long time before finally spotting it wedged between a broken brick and the base of a wall. Viktor dug it out carefully and held it in his palm. A faint smile had just begun to appear on his face when– Behind him, one of the 'corpses' sprawled in a pool of blood suddenly lurched upright. A combat knife drove straight into Viktor's chest. The blade pierced directly through the 'VIY' tattoo over his left pectoral muscle. The tattoo was torn apart instantly, the three letters mangled beyond recognition. Viktor reacted in a flash and slit the attacker's throat with a single strike.

“I won't let these mongrels steal a chance at real happiness.” Warren spun and spread the wings, the adlets spread out on instinct, Warren gutted two more and raced to the second mounted leader. Heavy gunfire and smoke hailed the coming of the Scald Crow, “Did somebody order back up?” Jack's disembodied voice shouted. The adlets tripped over themselves to get away, and several hurled spears only to have them clatter against the Scald Crows Superior armor. The heavy guns roared until the furry invaders were out of sight.

I can’t wait to have my mark of the coven on my back like the rest of the official members. It’s a crow sitting on top of a skull with shadows swirling around it. It’s totally badass, and I’ve been dreaming about the Moment I get mine.

Cein giggled at the look on her face and he walked out of his hiding place. “Very funny,” the redhead snorted and picked up the book from the floor. She read the title and realized it wasn't what she sought. She placed it back in its position and grabbed the next book but suddenly, Cein was in front of her, smiling wide and large, just like the glasses on his face. Reyna ignored him with a tsk. She wondered why the brothers chose to embarrass themselves with these glasses when they did not need them. Werewolves have sharp senses; it was like insulting the moon goddess's intelligence by using those human tools.

When she turned her attention to the other assassins, Emery rolled her eyes to the sides upon seeing the wordless question printed on their foreheads. “And no! I. Am. Not. Pregnant.” Gritting her teeth, she stabbed the chicken with her chopsticks before glaring at them.

Are you okay? "I think I sprained my ankle when we were falling." Kai swooped Anna off her feet and carried her in bridal style. He began to take careful steps forward until they stepped into the light. He looked around the strange place they were in. There were fire torches hanged at every corner of the room and the room was occupied with a old and dusty shelf containing only a book, a wooden table, a stool and a bed. Everywhere was dirty and full of cobwebs. "What is this place?" Anna asked as she looked around. Kai walked to the stood and placed Anna down carefully. Anna raised her sprained ankle up and held Kai for support. Kai cleaned the stool with his palm and made Anna sit on it.

Crows. Dozens of them. They came from nowhere, black wings filling the sky, screaming as they dove straight at the Vatrish men. Beaks struck eyes. Claws raked faces. Men shouted, cursed, stumbled back, swinging uselessly. Zayla pressed her hand to the window, heart pounding. “What…?” she whispered. The men swung wildly, trying to drive the crows away. It didn’t work. The birds only attacked harder—claws tearing, wings beating, black shapes crashing into faces and armor. Shouts filled the courtyard as soldiers stumbled back, slipping on snow and blood.

Silent, accurate. And then I saw it tucked in Kael’s limp grip. A letter, sides soaked in blood. The seal pressed into the wax sent ice through my blood. A crow, wings spread wide, drawn in red. The Crow symbol. Elara’s voice broke the quiet. “What… what does that mean?” I clenched the letter, my hand shaking. My mind roared with memories, with threats long hidden. “It means,” I whispered, eyes on the shadows that watched us still, “we’re already too late.”
