Suddenly, both of the books burst into a shower of gold, leaving nothing behind except the two spots of gold where they used to be seconds ago. A woman, standing at the center of the library looks up, revealing her ethereal appearance. Her black hair is framing her face, and her golden eyes glowing with unknown power. Suddenly, she speaks up, “Sisters we have a predicament.”

The crown descended. It burned before it even touched him, searing shadow carving into the lines of his shoulders, pressing against his skull like molten stone. His body jerked as though pierced by a thousand fangs at once. His warband screamed as the bond carried the pain into them, their blood boiling with the same fire. Ruby turned toward him at last, her face more gate than flesh. Her laugh was hollow thunder. “You cannot bear it. The crown does not bend—it consumes.” Maxim’s claws gouged the earth. She twisted, using his momentum to slam him into the second attacker. Luka’s shadows wrapped the third wolf’s legs, yanking him down. Lila pounced, ripping out his throat with a snarl that was far too mature for her age.

A crown of shadow floated over my head. The Crown whispered through me. This is justice. Heat spread under my skin. Not warmth. Power.
