He turns the stairs wondering if Christian will run down to sit beside his now awake sister but after a few seconds he reclines more to the thought that he might be sleeping. He turns to them again and then nods to acknowledge Laurel as she gulps, nodding back…soft but acknowledging. He opts to sit beside Gabriel, now facing the family with a questionary eye. The devil and the healer. Feels like judgment day. “Hi, Laurel, do you know who I am?” he leans forward after getting a reassuring nod from Gabriel. Laurel nods.

It was a message from the devil himself, Shea. 'Devon, do you believe in the supernatural?' I nearly choked on my popcorns when I read the message. I hesitated before typing a reply. 'Yeah I guess' His reply popped up on the screen of my phone, shortly. 'Call me crazy but I've been seeing things. Things that I don't understand' I desperately wanted to ignore his messages but I couldn't. 'What have you been seeing?' 'I have strange dreams. I've been dreaming about you. Can I ask you something?'

“Of course he does. The Devil always does.” He blinked at her, unsure if she was joking. She leaned in slightly, adjusting the collar near his neck as she whispered, “Listen to me, cher garçon. I cannot tell whether it is an expression of admiration or of warning. I wait several moments before exhaling. The room feels colder now that it is empty. Luca steps forward. “Do you think it will work?” “It will work,” I reply. “People like this cannot help themselves. Greed and fear always compel them to speak.”

For the first time, the "Devil" looked human—and that was the most terrifying thing of all. If he was human, he could be hurt. And if he could be hurt, he would be even more dangerous. "What happens now?" she asked.

Even though my touch affects her, she doesn’t want me above her. I could guess what was going on in anyone’s mind by looking into their eyes. I don’t know if it’s a gift from God or from the devil, but if you asked me, I’d say it’s from the devil. A sinful man like me can’t possibly have a place in God’s heart, and come to think of it, I am the devil himself. Maybe that’s why I can read people’s thoughts through their eyes.

I interjected sharply before she could even finish what she was saying. "He is not who you think he is!" I lowered my voice so our conversation does not reach prying ears. "Mom, what I am about to tell you is very serious, please do not think that I am insane or suffering from hallucinations, I know what I saw. The Devil is not a man, he is not a human being, he is something else, he is not from this world, you have to get us out of this house, out of this god forsaken country, mom!" Mom did not appear to be the slightest bit shocked, after all the crazy things I said, she was indifferent. I didn't understand it.

“You are the Devil, then!” “I'm the Adversary, Callie. Not of God, but humankind. I strip back men until they are confronted with the darkest part of their soul. It is only then that true growth, and healing, can begin.” He leaned into the stone angel, cupping my cheek in his hand. His hot breath made my hair stand on end as he whispered into my ear. “I can see people's souls, maggot. That's a reason I'm drawn to you.”
