"The only true value is in the Correction." I didn't try to erase the Editor. I used the bone pen to write a new law, not on the tree, but on my own skin, right over the wooden ring on my finger: 4. The Author is a participant, not a judge. The effect was instantaneous. The bone pen shattered. The schoolhouse walls exploded into a thousand butterflies of yellowed paper. The Editor let out a sound like a spine snapping, his parchment skin tearing as the "Authority" was returned to the characters.
