A jagged maze of cliffs and shadowed paths where cadets were warned never to go.
Xander pushed the final barrier aside, helping Zade through. The sky beyond was dark and heavy with storm clouds, wind whipping through the ravine, carrying the distant echo of alarms from the academy above.
Freedom.
Or something close to it.
Zade stumbled as he stepped onto uneven ground, his legs finally threatening to give out. Xander caught him instantly, pulling him close, one arm firm around his waist.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
The wind howled around them, rain beginning to fall in cold, sharp drops. Ironclad loomed above, a fortress of steel and cruelty, its lights blazing like watchful eyes.
