I didn’t know how to respond to that. Fort studied my face for a long moment. Then his gaze dropped briefly to the bruise forming along my jaw from the fight. “You look terrified,” he observed. “I’m not,” I said automatically. One corner of his mouth twitched slightly. “Liar.” Heat flooded my face. Of course he knew. Fort tapped the belt lightly against his palm. “Fear can be useful,” he said. “If you know how to control it.” He crouched slightly so that we were nearly eye level.

He should know that we are not in high school anymore, and this kind of behaviour is nothing but stupid. I don’t understand what this means, but I know it’s nothing good. I don’t know what to do. Should I touch the book? Should I even go near it? What if something bad happens to me if I do touch the book? The book finally stops moving, and it stays on one page. There’s an image in the book. I look hard at what’s being portrayed, and it’s the image of a beast with large horns.
