I kept waiting for Cecilia to get more agency, but it never really happens in the chapters I read. It’s solid power fantasy wish-fulfillment, just from an unexpected angle. The dynamic is less about romance and more about this hyper-competent guy rearranging the world to suit his protective whims.

The whole setup is pretty classic OI fare—a girl, thought to be a commoner, gets adopted by the grand duke and becomes the apple of his eye. The twist comes when it’s revealed she’s actually the real granddaughter, but through a super messed-up lineage secret. Her biological mother was the grand duke’s long-lost daughter who was swapped at birth by a jealous faction in the royal court, making our protagonist both the legitimate heir and a huge political threat.

I thought it was a neat way to subvert the 'commoner chosen by luck' trope. It reframes all the earlier doting as subconscious familial love, and the political enemies suddenly have a much bigger reason to want her gone. The revelation also forces the grand duke to confront his past failures in protecting his own child, which adds a layer of guilt to his otherwise fluffy grandpa persona. The story pivots from pure family fluff to a tense legitimacy crisis, which kept me reading.
