she asked softly. Malrik studied her for a long moment, then rested a hand briefly against the hilt of her blade. “Dangerous, yes. But not alone.” He turned, his expression shadowed. “You are tied to more than me. Guardians will come, Raven. As your power awakens, it will call to them. Protectors, Gods in flesh and of all kinds and creatures but not all may be your allies.” The words chilled her. Guardians? Gods? If Malrik himself was more than mortal, what others might awaken and will they be at her side or against her?

A line of armored vehicles emerged from the eastern gate. Five. Ten. Fifteen. More than enough. The Guardians weren't retreating. They were reinforcing. The lead vehicle stopped. Its doors opened. And a familiar figure stepped out. Tall. Black armor. Silver mask. The symbol of Ascension painted across his chest. The atmosphere changed instantly. Every Guardian straightened. Every child froze. Even the wind seemed to stop. The newcomer slowly removed his helmet. Revealing a young face. Maybe twenty. Cold eyes. Empty eyes.

"I have no idea." The giant warrior turned toward them. Then surprisingly spoke. Its voice sounded like grinding stone.

I kept my eyes locked on the stranger, refusing to blink, every instinct screaming that he was the true apex predator here. "What do you want?" He glanced around the clearing slowly, taking in the Guardians, the fallen, the tension crackling in the air, before his gaze returned to me. "I wanted to know whether the stories about the Guardians were true." "And?" His smile widened, revealing a flash of teeth that didn't belong to any ordinary man. "I'm impressed." One of the Guardians beside me—Marcus, I think—shifted his stance, fingers twitching on his rifle. "We should kill him now."

She replied, her eyes darting around the field perhaps to see if anyone was listening in on our conversation. I tossed my head back and let out a burst of laughter. I was not sure what it was exactly that made me laugh, I guess it was the fact she said that she was my guardian. I laughed until I felt tears in the corners of my eyes. “Oh yeah, you are my guardian right, just like Gamora in the guardians of the galaxy movie!” I exclaimed jokingly, laughing as I said so. “You must have heard of Ultima Luna, haven’t you?” She asked, ignoring my statement.

We call ourselves the Guardians." James couldn't help but snort. "The Guardians? Seriously? Sounds like something out of a comic book." Rachel smiled wryly. "Yeah, I know. But it's real.
