Julia’s wolf simply stood there, and I realized Julia likely did not know how to shift back. “Form a picture of yourself in your mind, Julia. You can do it,” I encouraged her. It took a few minutes, and finally she had shifted back to her human form. She was bent down on the ground, trying to catch her breath. The first few shifts could be painful, until you got used to it. For Julia, I had no idea what this experience would be for her.

Not destruction. Delay. Victoria’s voice lowered. “They’re freezing decision-making.” Amelia nodded. “Exactly.” Julian looked back at the projection. “Then we stop interpreting.” Amelia glanced at him. “That’s not enough.” “No,” he agreed. “But it’s the first step.” He stepped forward. “We create a single signal.” Victoria frowned. “Through what?” Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Execution velocity.” Silence. Amelia understood immediately. “You want to outpace interpretation.”

THIRTY-FOUR: The Shed Feet pounded earth. The faces in the bus slid from view, drawn into time-lapse blurs as Julia increased speed. Her hands swung in tight fists, back and forth, hard and fast. The shed loomed closer. Julia was a mouse under the eye of an overhead hawk. She increased her speed but it just didn’t feel quick enough. Every step was half a step too short. She faltered, regained her footing, pushed onwards.
