She expected a smile from me in response to her weak attempt at humor, but when I remained unchanged her smile dwindled. We got to the infamous lake house. It had a cedar shingle exterior painted a soft cream, large windows, a porch wrapped around the building, a wooden dock extending into the still waters of the lake with a small rowboat tied to its end, and the occasional splash of a fish jumping from the water. My gaze shifted to the top floor with dormer windows, and I wondered if the alpha had seen us. Or was he in his wolf form in the woods, surrounded by pine, spruce, oak, and maple trees scattered along the shoreline?

“It’s business. You leave now.” Aria stood up. Her legs felt weak. She didn't say goodbye. She walked to the elevator, her back straight, refusing to cry. She was the invisible sister. Invisible people didn’t make scenes. They just disappeared. The Lake House was a rotting corpse of a building. It sat on the edge of a black, still lake, surrounded by encroaching pines that blocked out the sky. The air smelled of mold and damp earth. Inside, it was a maze of dust sheets and shadows.

"Don't you have your room? Go lie down there." Lake glances at him for a second, then looks back the book she's holding. "I'm reading. I will go back when I finish this book. And no offense, but I couldn't like the guest room. It was kinda_ horror movies type room." Mahone starts to unbutton his shirt, stepping to his wardrobe. "It's Uncle Kramer's house, so no offense is taken. What are you reading anyway, at night? Sone steamy CEO romance? Or cute girl's exaggerated first kiss?"

She squeezed her muscles tighter, praying the thong would hold. Inside, the lake house smelled of pine and fresh linen. The open-plan living room and kitchen overlooked the sparkling water, floor-to-ceiling windows letting in the late afternoon light. Tyler had already started prepping for the barbecue—burgers, corn, cold beers in the fridge. Sweet, vanilla Tyler, always the perfect host. Maya helped him set the table, her mind racing with excuses for why she might disappear for “walks” or “naps.”

I'm not even sure I understand what love truly is… **** The lake house was very beautiful and bigger than I thought. It was well isolated with no other houses around it. It had a huge glass window that you couldn't see from outside. It was two stories tall and it was surrounded by thick trees. It was still dark when we got there, I wasn't sure what time it was but I was really hungry and tired. Don't blame me...I am always hungry :) Theo and Milo drove off after dropping us off. I was surprised because I thought they would be staying with us, but apparently, they have a different place and would be here later in the day. I will really miss their company.

"Choose the house, Leo. Pick the place where we’re going to grow old. Tell us where you want your studio. Tell us what color you want the bedroom. It’s your future. We’re just the ones making sure no one takes it away from you." I looked at the blueprints on the table. They looked like a map of my life—laid out, decided, and bought. I felt a surge of anger, then a wave of exhaustion, and finally, that familiar, creeping sense of relief. "The one with the lake," I said, my voice barely a whisper. "The light... it would be good for the oils." Ivan smiled, a genuine, bright expression that reached his eyes. "The lake house it is. I'll call the lawyers this afternoon."

Finally making it to our destination, we reached Lake Tahoe at nightfall. With no one around for miles, the cabin stood alone in the woods, its front porch lighting the way down the secluded driveway. With Liam fast asleep in the van, Jacob and I start unpacking. “This place reminds of a horror movie,” I say when we go inside. Jacob shrugs his shoulders. “Oh, it’s not so bad. Just be careful not to bother the neighbors down the lane, they get angry when they’re hungry.”

A monster drives a young girl insane. To be honest, I could have easily escaped this place in the past, but the thought of abandoning my ailing mother had me frozen. But today, I will take my courage to leave this place and choose my happiness once and for all. Believe it or not, this will be my first attempt to leave this horrible town in my thirty years of existence. The lake house is West Lake's most well-known residence. It's in the middle of the lake; thus, it provides a breathtakingly beautiful view of the entire surrounding area.
