The warm afternoon air smelled like fresh pine trees, clean lake water, and crushed grass. The lake house was a large, modern building made of natural dark stone, light wood, and massive glass windows. It sat right on the edge of a deep, blue body of water surrounded by high green hills. The sun was sitting high in the sky, casting a bright golden light over the calm surface of the lake. I carried our two leather overnight bags up the wooden steps of the back deck. Anastasia walked beside me, taking off her sunglasses and letting the cool lake breeze blow her dark hair back from her shoulders.

I said, then turned back to my plate to eat. “That’s right…Lunar Lake is on your property. That’s the watering hole for the wolves. You might want to stay clear of that part of the property.” Sherry bought out more fish and placed it in front of us, but I just stared at the basket. “It’s an all-you-can-eat fish fry,” Tyler said as he took two pieces of fish from the basket and placed them on his plate.

His family owns the lake, and before you say anything, yes people can own bodies of water.” “I know that already.” I snapped jokingly, narrowing my eyes at her sly smirk. “I’m not completely naïve.” “Really, because you just about had a fit when you met the bathroom attendant at Darkling.” She tossed her mane of choppy hair back and laughed, revealing her pristine smile that would’ve cost a fortune had she not near perfect genetics.

The living room was cozy, the lights dim, with a variety of food and wine on the center table. After making her comfortable on the sofa, Lake switched on the TV and began selecting movies for her on N*****x. Coco was uncomfortable and stopped him. “Not that one.” That movie had quite a lot of sex scenes, though they were not real. It felt weird for her to watch those with her fiancé. Most people would know each other before getting engaged, but only Lake would engage a woman before knowing her. The fact that she was the first woman to catch his eye meant everything, and her past, no matter how dark or bright it was, would remain there, meaning nothing to him.

There were yellow lights surrounding the house. The lake sparkles from the reflection of those lights. This place was so beautiful and the house was not really big, but enough for a family to live.
