Liam snaps from behind me. “Liam.” I see Ailduin’s jaw clench. “I do not have good experiences with Alphas and their interactions with Guardians.” He tells Liam. “In my experience, Guardians are forced into a mate bond they do not want or choose.” I take a step forward and put my hand on Ailduin’s arm, ignoring Liam’s growl of displeasure behind me. “It is not like that this time Ailduin. You have my word as a Guardian.”

My heart fluttered with love for him. "I'm fine," he repeated. I nodded, not quite sure of what to say after that. When I directed my eyes to the guardian, I saw he was watching us. His eyes were a twirl of emotions I could not define. Dane made me put my feet on the ground, planted a kiss on my forehead and drew back to walk to him. "He is going to die," the guardian said, sounding vexed. "Sorry," Dane said disinterestedly. A moment after, the dragon started to disintegrate into a bust of golden dust, floating up to the sky.

I whispered to the empty air. IS IT DOMINIC? My heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped bird. I shook my head frantically. "No! No, honey, your brother has been... he’s been everything. I just can't stay." I sighed, knowing how hollow it sounded. I was choosing my own safety over the girl I had sworn to guard. "I’ll find you another Guardian. Someone from the Luna Guard Academy who is ten times better than me. You’ll love her, I promise—"

Her mother’s spark glowed, its voice proud: “You’ve woven eternity.” Jessica turned to her companions, her heart full. “We’re guardians forever,” she said, her voice steady, a smile breaking through. Kade pulled her close, his love her strength. Selene’s glow lit the way, her wisdom their guide. Lucas’s fists bumped hers, his trust their anchor. Bryan’s hope pulsed, their spark. The starfield shimmered, worlds glowing, the nexus’s harmony eternal. The planet’s people joined hands, their new guardians rising, their love a thread in the constellation. Jessica led her team to the portal, the guardian star’s light following, its dawn a promise of peace.

Except a folded piece of parchment. She unfolded it. Only one sentence remained. The last pages were not destroyed. They were hidden by the last Guardian. Everyone stared. Aldren’s face drained of color. “No…” Elara looked up. “What is it?” He whispered almost to himself, “I thought the Guardians had all died.” Riven’s grip tightened on his sword. “If one survived…” “…then someone has been protecting the truth all this time.” Before anyone could speak again… A distant explosion shook the chamber.

He’s letting me stay, for the moment, Leah wrote out and showed her. “Letting you? For the moment? Let’s get something straight right now, buddy. After the night I’ve had, I’m not talking to anybody by myself,” Shannon announced, the monitor she was hooked up to beginning to beep rapidly as her heart rate and speaking volume both increased. “She’s my best friend, and whether she hears it now, or later, she will know all about it, regardless. She stays. Now, write down what you want to know.” Agent Fuller shrugged, then nodded.

We had already seen the evidence. A billion dead realities stretched beyond the fracture. The Last Witness continued. “But in one cycle, the guardian changed.” Its gaze settled on the Voidborn. “Just as it is changing now.” The balance tightened. Kael’s expression darkened. “And that universe survived.” The Last Witness nodded. “For a time.” The answer struck like a blade. For a time. Not forever. The First Queen immediately sensed the danger. “What happened?” The Last Witness closed its eyes briefly. As though reliving a memory it wished had vanished. “The guardian learned to embrace possibility.”
