“Your mentor.” I leaned back slightly, studying her. “Then let’s be honest.” She nodded. “When your mother built her authority,” she began, “she didn’t inherit stability.” I turned slightly, giving her my full attention. “She inherited chaos. Betrayal. Men who believed they could control her.” Her voice remained calm, but every word carried weight. “And she destroyed every one of them. I suggest you remember that.” She opened the file and slid it toward me. “We’ll skip the surface and go straight to the spine of the empire.”

I announce as she nods and keeps reading the titles on the books displayed. Walking to the bathroom seemed like the right thing to do. I stayed away from her for a few minutes before I lost my mind and devoured her against the window, viewing the forest. She looks so much like she belongs here that it makes my heart break because that’s not a possibility—not for me, not for us. We come from a different world, not money-related. I live for the crime, either to solve it or to commit it; while she is the light, she is the resolution, the happy ending someone deserves. I have too much darkness in my life. I would end up ruining her and turning off the light in her eyes.

The one who would help protect those who needed it, just like he did with Brynn. One thing that many of you had mentioned was that you enjoyed the species integration seen throughout this book and the Fated series. “Keeper?” My father’s voice was low and heavy. “You weren’t just born to guard the door, Lena. You were born to inherit what’s behind it.” I stumbled back a step, the weight of the revelation slamming into me like a hammer. “No. No, that’s not what I was taught. Grandmother said—” “Your grandmother lied,” my mother said, her voice breaking. “She lied because she hoped it would never come to this. She thought that if you lived an ordinary life, the legacy would die with her. She thought if she could keep you hidden long enough, the Old Powers would forget.”
