We would pretend instead that we trying to escape our reality by digging our way out of our troubles. After a certain age , we kind of stopped it. Instead we just buried it like every other adult would. We continue digging – it has been a while since we have spoken. We dig deeper and deeper , trying the dig the best hole we can. I can not help but sniffle a few times , as I mourn the murder of my bunny. After we dig a big enough grave for her , I sit back. I pay no attention to my clothes getting dirty by the earth soil – I pay no attention to the world around me. I feel my heart ache as I watch Andrew lowering the dead bunny in to it’s grave. The sun hangs low and heavy in the sky. It is October 31st. It should be a day to celebrate my twenty-fourth birthday, but instead, the air smells like cloying lilies and damp, freshly dug earth. Today is the day we bury the monster. The cemetery looks like a movie set for the elite. Everything is prim, cold, and perfect. Long, black cars with glass-like polish line the stone paths. The grass is a deep, unnatural green, and the tall gravestones stand like silent, frozen soldiers watching us.

"Your father is a man who was so desperate to marry into a wealthy family that he was willing to change his own last name. Funnily enough, you're the only one who actually bought his lies." Nicholas swayed slightly, but forced himself to stand tall. "So what if I married into the family? Your mother never left a will. She's dead. What's wrong with Hart Group being passed to me? Vicky's right. What do I have to be afraid of?" The next second, I opened the emerald pendant my mother had left me. "Who said my mother didn't leave a will?" This was the hope that everything we went through wasn't in vain. “How did you…” I tried to ask but I was too overwhelmed to complete my question. “I grabbed it before everything collapsed.” I stared at the book… at the burnt edges… at the ancient markings… at the weight of everything it carried. And for the first time since Liam disappeared, I felt hopeful and determined.

Never once had she imagined burying her instead. Olivia hugged Lily’s favorite teddy bear tightly against her chest while the child’s drawing book rested quietly beside the grave. With shaking hands and swollen red eyes, she picked up the book and slowly flipped through the pages one after another. At first the drawings looked normal, childish scribbles mixed with colorful sketches. Then Olivia noticed the hidden sentences Lily had written carefully across different pages. She slowly pieced the words together. "Maybe if Lily wasn’t with mummy, daddy would love her like he used to before I was born"
