JOSH’S POV The afternoon sun was a relentless, blinding glare off the hood of the silver Lexus. I didn’t even have the engine off before Ada was there. I didn’t bother turning off the Lexus. The engine hummed—a low, mechanical snarl that matched the look in my eyes as Ada blocked my path. She was dressed in a blazer that cost more than our tuition, her arms crossed, her eyes two chips of cold obsidian. She didn’t look like the acclaimed "Queen of NUAT" today; even though she wore expensive articles of clothing, she looked hastily put together.

And I switched the lights off and pulled out my favorite pair of scissors. Snip. Snip. Snip. I turned on the lights, and her eyes widened in shock. I showed her the blonde hair, which was now pooled at her feet. "You should know that I never break my promises." "Now get out." Taliatha opened the door and ran out of the room. A few minutes later, Ares eventually opened the door and noticed the hair on the floor. "Sierra." I shoved a grape inside my mouth. "What have I done now?"

He laughed at that, and the vibration in his chest sent a shiver down my spine. Still holding me, he turned the black stallion around and slowly headed home. The sunset stretched our shadows long across the golden field until they overlapped and merged into one. I looked at the shadows, and a ridiculous thought suddenly popped into my head. "Actually… Maybe this isn't that bad." The thought terrified me, so I immediately nipped it in the bud. "Wake up, Summer Reed! This is showing symptoms of trauma bonding! He's a madman and a kidnapper!" I screamed to myself.

His charred hand clamped around the guard’s ankle like a trap, pulling him into the red-stained snow. "Now!" Kael roared. I didn't hesitate. I drove my boot into the guard's temple and spun, the dagger flashing again. It wasn't a fight. It was slaughter in a phone booth. "The lightning! Mommy, the light is biting them!" Leo screamed. I turned. Leo was standing, his small hands open, trembling. He wasn't shifting, but a violent burst of gold lightning erupted from his chest. The energy slammed into a hovering surveillance drone. The machine shrieked as its sensors incinerated, spiraling into the abyss.

The Weaver hissed, advancing. *"The Thief will come willingly, or the pack will feed our roots."* Kael lunged, a blur of fangs and fury, but the Weaver dissolved into smoke, reforming behind him. Its claw raked his haunch, drawing blood that sizzled black on the snow. "Enough!" Lightning erupted from my palm, striking the Weaver's chest. It shrieked, its form fracturing into splinters and ash, but three more surged forward.

He let out a small huff, "You owe me more than just that." I looked up quickly, our eyes locked, and suddenly I found myself lying down with him close. "I meant what I said before. I want you to be with me." I tried to wriggle free, "Mr. Lloyd, you can't be serious, please let me go." His eyes looked so sad, and I felt a tear from his eye touch my face. "Wendy, don't you remember me at all?" "Mr. Lloyd, you..." "Just call me Thomas."

It was a pair of dragon wings, burning red. As the flow of the lightning reached Leila’s left palm, both Leila and Thorn felt a strange and immense resistance. Something wasn’t right. Leila’s left hand suddenly became scorching hot, the red dust in her palm moving violently. As a fierce bolt of lightning flashed across the open air, the goddess suddenly disappeared. Lightning struck the five flaming pillars, and all of them were split down the middle. A sharp pain assaulted Leila’s forehead, as if the lava itself was burrowing through her skull. The unfinished sigil had vanished. She lost consciousness at once. As she drifted away, she thought she heard a raven cawing beside her ear.

She doubted that some eleventh-hour miracle would save her tonight. Christophe reappeared and shed his toweling robe in an untidy heap on the floor. He looked at her, blazing all-male satisfaction, and Lara shrank under the sheet. He stood half in shadow, half in light, the long, muscular planes of his golden body a glorious vision of rampant masculinity, and Lara felt her own hunger stirring, insidious as a secret invader.
