“Tell me more about Ariel!” The memory vanished before he could catch it. Lucien blinked hard and looked towards Elara. She was watching him quietly with her head tilted. His ears turned slightly red immediately. “Nobody is supposed to know I still watch Disney movies.” She rolled her eyes, “I won’t tell.” He laughed a bit and leaned back against the grass slowly, staring toward the pale sunrise. “Well,” he muttered reluctantly, “The Little Mermaid is about a girl who wanted more than the world she was trapped in…”

Entire civilizations hidden beneath the waves. I stared in amazement. "We don't have anything like this." Molly slowly shook her head. "No." "We've got a few seal shifters." "And otters." "But..." She looked toward the underwater city. "...nothing like this." One little mermaid noticed us. She waved enthusiastically before swimming away. Neither of us waved back. Not because we didn't want to. Because we still weren't certain whether entering these worlds would trap us forever. We quietly closed the portal behind us.

It also meant that I could keep an eye on him if needed. “See you later, sis! Oh! And I’ll be a little late; Ms. Lindsay said that she’ll show us a movie with talking fishes in it.” Julian said with wonder as he described Finding Nemo and I felt horrible for not being able to show him movies and cartoons that a kid his age should be watching. I could barely manage food and other supplies for our home with the income I made so paying for a TV was out of the question. Julian might be the only kid in class today who hasn’t watched Finding Nemo yet.

Shaking my head no, I settle once more for the water. When Liam gets back, he’s scrolling through his movies when he lands on Disney’s Little Mermaid. At first I thought he was joking but he’s just staring at me asking for my approval. “I guess”, shrugging my shoulders. I have no clue what it’s about except maybe a mermaid. He is a little more excited than he probably should be for this movie but seeing a movie he actually likes makes me happy.

There were neat, small sticky notes poking out from almost every single chapter. I opened to the first marked page. In Maverick’s handwriting, there was a note that read: “Does page 14 mean the data moves faster if you shorten the string? Let me know if I got that right.” I stared at the note, my heart feeling so light that I felt like a teenager again. I looked up at him, completely stunned. "Maverick... did you buy a coding textbook?"

This was so much better than the last time I went underwater. We had been moving for a while when, just as the submarine was about to ascend, a massive whale appeared in front of us. It was bigger than the submarine. When it glided past the glass, its sheer size blocked out almost everything else. Mickey and Minnie went silent, eyes wide and sparkling. Then Minnie said suddenly, ‘Do you think there might be mermaids down here?’ Mickey shook his head. ‘Mermaids aren’t real.’ ‘But the stories…’ she argued.

The day Arianna had been waiting for had finally arrived. The little girl celebrated her fifth birthday. Arianna looked beautiful in the little mermaid costume she wanted. The Little Mermaid-themed birthday celebration was magical and full of joy. Every corner of the room was decorated with alluring sea touches and iconic characters from the underwater world. The decorations were dominated by sea colors, such as sea blue, sea green, and coral, making the room look fresh and creating a cool and refreshing atmosphere, like being at the bottom of the sea. Of course, this made Arianna very happy.

'Just keep swimming. I blinked. "Finding Nemo!" I frowned. "What about it?" No one answered and when I looked at dad for help. He shrugged. "Sweetie you are special. If King Unicorn thinks you can solve his clues, you can. Never doubt yourself." I just looked back at the note. The next day I removed the Finding Nemo DVD from our movie shelf and found another note inside, blue this time. 'Always close this door.' The next day, I found a note stuck at the bottom of my chocolate milkshake in the refrigerator. 'She is cute.'

I couldn’t help but smile, her joy was a reminder of the simple pleasures that often go unnoticed in our adult world. Mackenzie’s eyes sparkled with excitement as she nodded vigorously, her small frame bouncing with enthusiasm. “Megan, I think I want to be a mermaid someday,” she declared with the determination only a child can muster. “I want to swim in the ocean and talk to dolphins and whales, like him!” Her words were so full of possibility, they made me reflect on how precious these moments were.
