“Go change out of your school clothes first.”
She groans dramatically but dashes up the stairs. “Be careful!” I call after her.
“I’ll follow her,” Sheila says, already heading up.
“Thanks,” I murmur.
I move to clear the counter, but then—
A sharp, high-pitched cry cuts through the air.
Followed by wailing.
I freeze. My breath catches. Then I’m going up the stairs, my pulse hammering against my ribs.
I find Lily on the floor a few feet from the master bedroom, clutching her foot, tears spilling down her round cheeks. Sheila is crouched beside her.
