Mercy's words were like a bucket of cold water was thrown over his head. They rang in his ears. A Royal Decree~ Only a Royal Decree had the power the summon a ruling King or Queen. And it was only issued if a Monarch had fallen or was about to fall leaving his or her unattended Kingdom or Queendom behind for grabs. "From which Kingdom has the Decree been issued?" Vladimir inquired with a calculating gleam in his eyes. The prospect of attaining a whole Kingdom made excitement rush through his veins like opium. "The Decree had been issued from the Queendom ruled by Amber King and Darach King." Vladimir's lips parted, his eyes filled with bafflement.

Cassian leaned in slightly. “Choose, Alpha.” The chamber waited. Even my council held breath. Political catastrophe either way. Then I laughed. Softly, and dangerously. Cassian frowned. I stepped forward. Slow and measured. Until we stood inches apart. “You mistake me,” I said. His smile faded. I placed the marriage decree on the table. Then drove a dagger through its center. Steel through parchment into oak. Gasps erupted. My voice carried through stone. “I do not take orders from thieves wearing titles.”

“Your personal quarrels are irrelevant and won’t hold water. The decree... the forbidden decree... requires the Luna to declare her mate, and her mate will be the father of the unborn child.” My heart lurched just hearing them argue over me. Roderick inhaled sharply, taking it all in, while Norway stiffened where he stood. “What decree are you talking about?” I forced out. Maron lifted an ancient scroll tied in black. “The Decree of Sole Claim. A Luna may carry only one Alpha’s heir. If there is confusion, she must choose publicly, and it will be permanent. The unchosen Alpha…” He met my eyes. “…will be exiled or executed.”

As the last few stragglers trickled in, Chris raised his hand, and the murmurs of the crowd slowly died down until a heavy silence blanketed the square. “I have brought you here today to issue a decree that will change the future of our pack... forever,” he began.

He beckoned for his men. “Manuel, what are you doing? This is not what we talked about, what are you doing?” A terrified woman questioned her husband’s rancid decisions, fear in her eyes. Men trooped in with harmed weapons. “Seize that monster.” He pointed at Lucius, the young Alpha King, “And go kill him, it’s an order,” he instructed coldly. The men went around Lucius and grabbed him, he appeared unfazed less than scared as the men dragged him out.

I was almost going crazy with the fact that there was another man beside her, caring for her and our baby, and making her smile, when I should be the person doing all of that. Jealousy. It filled my bones and marrows. It almost suffocated the life out of me. It should be me. It should be her beside me. It should be us ruling this pack. “Alpha, did you hear anything that I just said?” I whipped my head to Aidan who was still standing before me. Had he said something? I raised my brows, prompting him to go on. “What was that?” “The council's decree,” he said. “And what about it? What decree did they make about the Pack?”

“You want to test me.” “Yes.” “Publicly?” “Yes.” A flicker of satisfaction crossed his features. “Transparency inspires confidence.” Coward. “You will regret that,” I replied calmly and a few of them exchanged glances. “Is that a threat?” someone asked. “No,” I said. “It’s strategy.” “You know what?” I stepped forward, placing the decree back on the table. “I accept.” The word rippled through the chamber, and call me crazy or whatever, but I could swear I saw that man who could as well be my savior curse underneath his breath, like I'd just made a mistake.

“Maybe not, but it doesn’t mean I can’t warn her to keep her human hands off what is mine.” My heart pounded with adrenaline. I had no idea what she was talking about. “I am not yours,” Thale hissed. The man who I didn’t know cleared his throat and stepped forward. He was well dressed with sharp facial features. He was a large man like Thale, well-built, but definitely older. His long black hair was tied at the nape of his neck. “If I may Thale, despite Alvena’s theatrics. She is correct. Your union has already been decided. Something that you agreed to.” His voice held an element of superiority. I got the impression that this man was in charge.

Carrying a thick leather folder in his left hand and a heavy, coiled black leather whip in his right, he stopped right next to my chair and opened the folder. "Read the official decree to the pack, Jason," I instructed in a calm, flat voice. "Make sure every single person in this clearing hears the words clearly." Nodding, Jason pulled a thick piece of parchment paper from the folder, turning to face the kneeling crowd and the terrified former Alpha.

"My Lord,there is a message from the palace", the voice of the servant brought them back to reality. They quickly disengaged. "What does the message contain?" , Alistair asked the servant. "It must be the new decree passed by the King", Theodore informed him. "what new decree?", "a curfew has been put in place, once it's dark, nobody should be seen outside", Theodore explained. "Why?", "because of the beast", "I see". Alistair instructed the servant to keep the letter in his study. The servant bowed and left.
