“I am. Don’t worry about me—I’m a werewolf, Diego. You don’t have to treat me like glass.”
Her defiance made me smile despite myself. She had always been fire disguised in silk.
“And you?” she asked, tilting her head up at me. Her eyes caught the faint candlelight, glinting like liquid amber. “Are you okay? After everything?”
I hesitated, then nodded. “I’m alive. I heal. But the moment you woke, I felt it. That’s why I came.”
Her hand lifted, brushing the side of my jaw where faint bruises still lingered. Her touch burned hotter than any scar. I leaned into it for half a second before pulling away, because if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be able to leave.
