I scanned the chamber, my breath rasping out through dry lips, my chest aching in fear and horror. They were like me. Like Rita-May Turnbull. They were maledicti. They were the ones who had seen the truth and now they were here, held in some grotesque processing plant, like cattle ready for a slaughter that would never come. I knew now why Ethan had lied to me about what the Demons did to the maledicti, I knew why he'd told me they killed them after taking their souls. Death was better than this. It had to be. This was evil. Monstrous. There was something wrong with their eyes. I took a step closer, morbid curiosity driving me to look, even though I wasn't sure I wanted to see anymore.

“I’m not mad, Aiden. But from now on, maybe find us a new spot. Something just ours.” His smirk returned, slow and dangerous. “Guess I’ll just have to make it perfect then.” “Good,” I said. “Oh, and by the way? Since Eli and Arnold have claimed the rooftop, you’re officially out of options, Cross.” He leaned in, his voice low and teasing. “That’s fine. I don’t need options. I just need you.” And just like that, my heart was back to working double shifts. Maybe nightmares weren’t so bad after all.

I said softly. “I couldn’t sleep,” she murmured. “Too many dreams.” I understood all too well. I reached for her hand, squeezing it gently. “One day, the nightmares will fade,” I promised. “And when they do, we’ll have built something worth dreaming about.” She gave me a small nod, as if she wanted to believe me but wasn’t quite sure she could. Footsteps approached, and Liam’s voice cut through the quiet. “We just got word from one of our scouts. The northern faction is on the move. We don’t have much time.”

Solia sat at the dining table; everyone who left for the mission was around the table. She didn't have an idea what they did to the rest of them outside, but she heard about it from Alessandro. He told her everything that happened, including how they fought with the bad guys and rescued the ladies. Solia also noticed that Rosa and Rose are getting over their differences. Everyone was glad that the mission had been successful, but Solia was worried. Yulia should have been out now, but she was nowhere to be found.

"Go to sleep. Goodnight." I end the conversation because I was so tired, the busy day was finally taking its toll. "Goodnight.
