I think about the mountains. Unbothered. Unmoved. Still there regardless of everything that has happened in front of them. “I know you are,” I say. He nods once. We stand in the cold morning for a moment, not touching, not quite apart, in the same in-between space we have occupied all week, except it feels different now. Less like suspended uncertainty and more like a beginning that knows it is a beginning and is not pretending to be something further along.

At this point, the only thing that keeps Edward from crossing the line that he hates is to ask for her consent. There are fewer passersby in the area, which gives them the privacy they needed. Edward learned a little closer which made Hailey close her eyes. The tension, sexual tension rather between the two of them is close to jumping off the cliff. If you look far enough into the distance, you can see another looming mountain where the highest peak still has snow at the top. “Is it Mare approved?” he asks. I know him well enough to know there’s a hesitant edge to his voice. I don’t know why he’d ever think that this wouldn’t be one of my favorite scenes in the world.

I feel like we’re all holding our breaths and silently praying they give up soon, as we carry on forward at breakneck speed and Meadow stays with her eyes glued to the road and her foot pressed hard on the gas. “Thinner means it’s maybe not going to be much longer, right?” Carmen breaks the tense silence and leans forward as though she is peering outside to try and see any kind of end to the smog and I sigh listlessly. “I don’t know. The mountain is miles to the north, and it reached there. So if it does thin we have miles of it yet.” I point out in deflation and rest my head against the frame of the window, peering out into endless mist for miles.

Only Sloria lies in the middle, separating the countries with its vast snow and large mountains which cloud the country from sight.

So I wouldn’t lose him in the midst of New York traffic but we would make it to the mountains before sun down. About forty minutes later we came to a stop at the edge of a cliff that signaled the end of the road. Gustav got out of the car and came over to me. I got off my car as well and locked it as I followed him to his car, that was just about touching the metal railing that bordered the road. I looked up ahead at the view, a gasp of astonishment leaving my lips. And that’s when I understood why he wanted to bring me hear. “Is this the Adirondack Mountain ranges?” I asked, astounded by the beauty in front of my eyes.

The sheer size and grandeur of the mountain were awe-inspiring, and it seemed to be a world unto itself. As one approached the mountain, they would notice the intricate patterns etched into the rock face, carved over centuries by the elements, creating a unique and breathtaking landscape.
