It was almost ten years ago that this strange friendship had begun. The old woman was cleaning her utensils one day when she heard a knock on the door. She looked up from the sink, a little astonished. No one ever visited her. She closed the tap to see if she had heard correctly. She could not trust her ears nowadays. Old age was beginning to take its toll. Another knock, a little louder this time. There was no mistaking the sound. She shuffled towards the door, the glass that she was cleaning still in her wrinkled hand —another knock.

And because she was such a nosy creature, she even moved closer to the closed gate – putting her ear on the metal to listen to their conversation more. “Who was that?” A hoarse voice asked. It was surely from someone older than her neighbor. “I don’t know. Some random people.” Her neighbor replied. Leila felt offended that he didn’t even remember her name, but his next words made her blood boil. “Just throw these cookies away. I don’t like any of them.” He ruthlessly commanded. She gasped in horror and her eyes widened. Her cookies! “What kind of cookies? Maybe, I can taste it. Just give it to me.” The man with the hoarse voice answered.

I wondered. I walked slowly towards the window with my arms wrapped around me. I grabbed the window handles to pull them back to close it but I stopped midway when I noticed the lights next door. Who could that be? The house beside us was empty for over a year. I squinted and could actually see the inside of the room through the window adjoining mine. Like seriously, I could strangle the guy who constructed these houses like that. So damn close! Anyway, we finally got some new neighbours. What an odd time to move in though, I couldn't help but think. I just hope they would be nice. My parents could have some pals.

She's so damn snoopy. Wait, did she just say neighbours? "Where do you live?" I ask, my heart pounding in complete fear. I hope she doesn't give me the answer that I dread the most. "The house next door." She grins. "We are neighbors. " No! "Trent is going to be so happy that his 'friend' lives just next door." She adds. "I can't wait to share the great news! You should invite us for a housewarming party. Oh, pass. I forgot how dramatic and salty you can get in a party."

I took advantage of the opportunity to rush to the front door and greet whoever was knocking. "It's 7:00 p.m., and you're disrupting our night. It's fine to party, but you seem to be having so much fun that you've forgotten about your neighbors! Stupid kids!" One of our neighbors voiced her displeasure. She even stole a glimpse inside and grimaced. She was probably judging my batchmates now in her head. Three of our neighbors are standing directly in front of my door right now; they are all people in their 50s with angry expressions on their faces.

Its been a whole week of silence and I was ready to end it. “Are you the new neighbor?” said T.K who just returned from work. “Yes I am.” replied the new neighbor whose voice rang a bell. He was as happy as he could be with that once I promised him. Last month, our next door neighbors moved out. They had been renting the house for the past 2 years. They were finally in a position to buy their own house. We were so happy for them that we threw them a party. We all had a great time, and we even got to meet some of the other neighbors in our neighborhood. The next week they moved out. I figured they would be busy, so I hadn't been bothering them much. Last week a moving van pulled up into the driveway of their house. I watched as they moved all their furniture into the house. I started wondering if they were gay.

' He sat next to her. "What's up?" He tried not to sound too eager. "Okay, I have the theme for our next series. It will be called 'My Annoying Neighbor'. I got the idea from Mr. Northgate. Remember him? That older man who lived next door to us when you were in middle school?" "I remember him. He was creepy. He used to knock on our door all the time. Asking stupid questions about our landscaping and pool."

I close the door and walk towards the entrance. “Look over there! It’s little Amber. Is she trying to get her friend’s money?” A voice spoke. A neighbor who lives one floor below me. “Shut up. You don’t know me. Go buy some cats and get a life. Stop bothering me,” I yell at her as I stomp my way in. In Front of my apartment door, a small bag filled with oranges. The only neighbor I like out of all the compound. I smile and walk to the door beside mine. I knock on the door as I hear small thumps coming from the inside.
